Larousse, Pierre

   educator, encyclopedist, publisher
   Born in Toucy, Pierre Larousse was a school director who published a series of pedagogical works that would renew the appreciation of the French language (Traité complet d'analyse grammaticale, 1850; Jardin des racines grecques, 1858; Jardin des racines latines, 1860). in 1852, he founded a publishing house, the Librairie Larousse, which quickly grew. His major work was the Grande Dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle (appearing in sections between 1864 and 1876), an encyclopedic collection that was the work of numerous contributors and that collected an enormous amount of erudition in a readable style and format.
